Have you had to go somewhere where you felt you didn't belong, but you had to stay to help your family? The Dragon's Child, a historical fiction novel, is written by Laurence Yep. This book is about Chinese immigration, hardships, and bravery and would especially interest children. It tells about the journey of a young boy, Yep Gim Lew, and his father, Yep Lung Gon, traveling to America as immigrants from China. They must go to the "Golden Mountain," America, to work and earn money for their family in China.
The theme of this book, The Dragon's Child, is bravery. Yep Gim Lew, the main character, has to go with his father to America and help him make money to send to his family in China. Chinese immigrantswere not wanted in America at the time so the Americans would make it hard for them to get in. The Americans would interrogate them to make sure they weren't an impostor somebody dangerous. Yep Gim Lew was brave because he had to pass hard tests that the Americans gave him verbally about his home, family, work, village, and family. If he got one little detail wrong and he didn't pass he would be sent back home to China and his family starve and lose their home with no money.
The book is very well-written and has a lot of strong points. One strong point is that the book is very descriptive and has a lot of details. The book describes how China goes through poverty, the ride on the ship, the Chinese immigrant interrogation room, and many more things very descriptively. Another strong point would be how the book is entertaining and fascinating. The book is never boring and something is always happening which makesthis book such a great novel. This novel doesn't have many weak points, but one would be how the book is short. After the boy and his father make it into America it doesn't continue to say what happens next which is the most anticipating part. Overall this book is a good novel.
I encourage people to read this novel because it is a well-written novel that tells about Chinese immigration history. This book desribes how hard life was for Chinese. They went through poverty, hardships, and many rough times. This book would be a good way for children and adults to learn more about history.
Overall The Dragon's Child is a good, anticipating, and exciting read. The book tells the true story of how a boy and his father travel to America as immigrants to work and earn money for their family back home in China. This is a good read that tells about Chinese history and immigrants. This book is very well-written and should be read by anyone who gets the chance.
